For Emerging to Established screenwriters who are ready to get into the room where it happens, the TPP Script Development Lab offers  a small group writing intensive twice/year that provides you with the valuable tools to write your screen or teleplay effectively and efficiently from idea to pitch in less than 5 months. Release your frustration about the nepotism of Hollywood, the largest gated community in the world. Write a dope script and gain access to industry professionals who can give you the passcode.

HOW THE LAB WORKS

When you join the Script Development Lab, consider yourself contracted as a writer-for-hire. As a part of your step deal, you'll work with your Instructor (the producer or executive in this case) from idea to pitch to prepare to pitch to Hollywood execs, managers, producers, and agents.

  • Submit a previous script for an assessment = submitting your writing sample to a studio/network
  • Move to consideration for the class = your script receives a recommend from in-house script coverage
  • Pitch the idea you want to write in class = pitch meeting with the studio
  • An invitation to join the Tribe = enter a development deal
  • Write and submit pages at an agreed upon pace = fulfilling the contracted step deal
  • Give, receive and address notes with your Tribe to meet your writing goals = notes calls with executives
  • Hear your script out loud read by actors = The Table Read
  • Revise and polish your screenplay = complete the step deal
  • Create your pitch materials and craft your pitch = take your pitch out to networks and studios​
THE SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT LAB
  • Outlining
    • The Pre-work - Generate marketable ideas, build dynamic characters, and set S.M.A.R.T. story goals to prepare to write your script.
    • The Beat Sheet - Convert the pre-work into an organized list of the major moments in your story both physically and emotionally.
    • The Outline - Expand the beat sheet into a detailed scene list that tracks the arc of your character's goals.
    • ​Includes:
      • HTF do I Write an Outline Workbooks
      • Weekly 1:1 Office Hours with your instructor
  • Writing
    • The Script - Transfer the outline into script format including dialogue to tell an incredible story.
    • The Revision -  Address your notes to polish your screenplay.
    • The Table Read - Hear their words aloud by actors followed by a talkback to provide insight on the current status of your screenplay.
    • Includes: 
      • ​*Weekly Development Notes
      • Option to Add-on 1:1 Office Hours
  • Pitching
    • The Logline - Formulate an elevator pitch that entices Hollywood executives into wanting your screenplay in their hands.
    • The Pitch Deck - Create a visually appealing pitch deck to share your vision of why your story should be made.
    • The Pitch -  Craft an evocative oral pitch that sells your story and gets it on the screen.​​
    • Includes: 
      • Tracking the progress from the application pitch to the final pitch.
      • Pitching to a panel of industry professionals with an opportunity for a general meeting.
      • Option to Add-on 1:1 Office Hours
What is the application process?
In order to join the Script Development Lab, screenwriters must apply. The application process is to assess your level of screenwriting as this program is best suited for Emerging to Established screenwriters who are prepared to write on deadline and have an open schedule to consistently write and read your fellow Tribe Members' work so you can reach your writing goals as a group.

The application includes submitting a previously written screenplay. THIS IS NOT A DEEP DIVE into your screenplay. For Development Notes, please submit your screenplay here.

If you receive a CONSIDER or NEEDS DEVELOPMENT on your assessment, you will be offered the opportunity to pitch your idea for the class. 

If you are accepted into the Lab, the application fee will go towards your Lab Program Fee. Pen Pals are accepted into the program on a case-by-case basis when enrollment is open.

What happens if I'm not accepted into the program?
You may not be accepted into the Lab for many reasons. Those who are not accepted will be given personalized next steps to continue on their writing journey with TPP.
Can I work on a rewrite in the program?
The Script Development Lab guides screenwriters through a proven writing process from idea to pitch to help them reproduce multiple screenplays/year. Because of this, screenwriters should join the program with a fresh idea. If you are interested in revising or rewriting your screenplay, we offer packages to those who submit for Development Notes.
What happens if I miss a scheduled meeting?
All sessions are recorded and available at your request. Communicate with your Story Expert about scheduling conflicts to see if there is an opportunity to reschedule your 1:1 Office Hours. We will accommodate where we can, but there may not always be wiggle room. It's at your Story Expert's discretion and on a case-by-case basis.
Can I schedule additional 1:1 Office Hours with my Story Expert?
There are a fixed amount of scheduled 1:1 Office Hours with your Story Expert in the Lab.  However, you can always schedule additional Office Hours at the hourly rate. Your Story Expert will give you a link to access their schedule at your discretion.
Do I need screenwriting software to be in the Lab?
Screenwriting software is highly recommended but not required to be in the Lab. If you need screenwriting software, we recommend Arc Studio. Get it at a discounted rate here.

Who Will We Pitch To?

That depends on you. You should be pitching to companies and people who are a good fit for you and your story. Most importantly, they need to be open to new clients and new stories. We'll handle that heavy lifting. Once we know what stories you're writing and learn your personal brand, we'll choose the best panel for the cohort.
