Q: Do I need to go to film school to have a successful screenwriting career?

A: No. Periodt.

No problem. As we're trekking our way towards a professional career in screenwriting, we are working day jobs and multitasking dating, parenting, and marriage. So, we may not have the time to dedicate two to four years towards film school. We may not even have time to write every day. We may choose to nap during our 5 minutes of peace. And that's ok.

Film school is a great way to learn the foundations of screenwriting and build a network of colleagues to fight through the trenches of Hollywood with if you enjoy learning in a classroom setting. For those of us who are working professionals continuously multitasking jobs, families, dating, and other life events,

The Professional Pen offers live courses to teach you the fundamentals of screenwriting and hold you accountable in writing your screenplay. Our Screenwriting Academy offers:
  • Expert Instruction: Our Story Experts are experienced instructors and professionals in the entertainment industry. Learning from these industry experts provides working adults with valuable insights, techniques, and feedback that can significantly accelerate their learning curve.
  • Flexible Scheduling: TPP offers evening and weekend classes to accommodate the busy schedules of working adults, allowing them to pursue their passion for screenwriting without giving up their day jobs.
  • Online Learning: The ultimate flexibility for working adults. No need to commute to a physical location, making it easier to balance work, family, and learning.
  • Focused Curriculum + Practical Skills: Our courses skip the theory and get straight writing works in progress. Students immediately apply what they learn, leading to tangible improvements in their scripts and big boost to their confidence.
  • Personal Fulfillment: Engaging in community with other emerging screenwriters provides a sense of pride and creative expression, which is a welcome break from the routine of a demanding job.

This is your screenwriting academy. Take advantage.

THE TPP METHODOLOGY

Our CEO + Head Consultant Shannan E. Johnson has been on both sides of the desk as an executive and a screenwriter.  She has also taught at Florida State University, her alma mater, The New York Film Academy, and screenwriting conferences and festivals around the world. From working with screenwriters of all levels and receiving feedback from students about how she makes her lessons easily transferrable into practical writing skills, she created the TPP methodology in teaching scriptwriting to make it less daunting and more relatable.

TPP uses our everyday life skills and contemporary produced screenplays - not those of the past or on the list of classics chosen by people we may not relate to, but films and TV shows we grew up on and enjoy on a night of Netflix and chill. No matter your instructor, our Story Experts have been trained in the TPP methodology to create a consistent student experience.

Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your skills, the TPP Academy is designed to make learning screenwriting accessible, engaging, and effective.

Beginner Writer

Comprehending what a "goal" looks like in my life, how I'd form a plan to pursue it, what "obstacles" are in my way, etc., helped me appreciate the work that goes into making a fictional character's goals, plans and obstacles believable in a story. Aptly named,
TPP's course gave me the confidence to acknowledge that every moment is already mine to do with what I choose; my stories, my voice to tell them with. Excuses are abundant but for writers who have work to get done, there's The Professional Pen.

I highly recommend taking any course with TPP.  As a beginning writer who did not go to film school, I had so many insecurities and imposter syndrome. In the course, we confront this head on. You walk away encouraged, confident in your story, and with a method. This is another added bonus. TPP has developed a disciplined methodology that’s adaptive for individuals yet highly impactful if followed as prescribed. I know I will be utilizing and recommending their services again!

Learn Screenplay Structure

Open to all levels

What is screenplay structure?

Screenplay structure is the breakdown of action, called story beats, told in an organic order to stimulate an emotional response. Structure is what we lay people call storytelling.

Structure is everything. In order to become a professional screenwriter, you must master it so you can kick out multiple screenplays per year, have a strong portfolio, and always be in the business of selling your next idea and sealing your next gig.

Understanding structure also helps you find loopholes in your story and fix them during the revisions process. Learning how story mechanisms function, help you understand what we call in Hollywood - the note within the note - because you know why something isn't working and the effect it has on the rest of the story.

TPP’s Idea to Story course takes your idea for a feature or television pilot or spec and builds it from the ground up through:
  • Building 3-dimensional characters
  • Using S.M.A.R.T Goals to set attainable internal + external goals
  • Creating natural complications that heighten the takes
  • Mapping out the large building blocks of your story into a beat sheet

OUTLINING WORKSHOP SERIES

Open to intermediate + level screenwriters

Did you know that outlining is an expectation of professional screenwriters?
Outlines are used to get the screenwriter, showrunner, producer, studio, and/or network on the same page before going to script.
Picture
What is an outline?

An outline is a fleshed out scene list of your story. It's used as a bridge between your story as an idea and the actual screenplay.

Outlines are expected in:
  • Step Deals - Screenwriters hired as a work-for-hire writer must provide an outline as a part of their contracted services
  • Writers Rooms - After breaking story in the room, TV writers must provide an outline of each episode to the studio and network for approval of the arc of the season
Outlines can also:
  • Make your writing process more efficient and effective
  • Stop you from getting writers block and getting stuck on the page
  • Decrease the amount of revisions and rewrites

Now that you understand the importance of outlining, join us for this workshop. It's your fast track to learning how to outline.

THE TABLE READ

Open to screenwriters of all levels
Congratulations! You've done the work and finished your screenplay. Take a beat and celebrate this moment. Then come back with fresh eyes and ears to hear your characters' voices jump off the page in The Table Read.

Table Reads are an important part of the production process for features and TV series. It is the time when the entire creative team, including the studio and network executives, and production team gather to hear the script read aloud for the first time by the cast.

Picture
What is a Table Read?
A reading of a screenplay in which the dialogue, action, and scene headings are read out loud by a cast of actors.

The Table Read gives screenwriters an opportunity to hear their words aloud by actors followed by a talkback to provide insight on the current status of your screenplay. During a Table Read, screenwriters should be looking for:
  • If the script is interpreted as it is intended
  • If dialogue sounds as natural aloud as it does in your head
  • Identify areas of confusion and problem areas in the script

And, the best part? TPP does all of the heavy lifting. We create the space, cast the roles, and lead the talkback. All you have to do is show up with an open mind and listen to your words spring from the page.
Online screenwriting course personal training

The Table Read is best for screenwriters who are ready to workshop their script by hearing their screenplay aloud before they head into the revisions process.

THERE'S NO TABLE READ WITHOUT ACTORS

WTF workshop reviews arrow

ACTORS

Open to intermediate+ level actors

Filmmaking is a collaborative effort. There are no works to produce without writers. Subsequently, there is no produced work without actors. We need each other in order to create our art and entertain the masses.  The Table Read is not only an opportunity to share your talent with our writers as they hone their craft, but also an opportunity for actors to work on theirs.
Online screenwriting course personal training
  • Practice your cold read - Often actors are given sides (scenes from scripts) on the spot and required to read. In the Table Read, actors receive scripts within an hour of the read.
  • Strengthen your versatility - Each actor will play multiple characters during The Table Read.
  • Learn scenework from the screenwriter's point of view - Learn screenplay structure and screenwriting jargon that will help you quickly breakdown your sides and read from a place of truly understanding the screenwriter's intentions.
  • Practice listening and reacting to your scene partners - Post the pandemic, many auditions are via Zoom. During The Table Read, practice listening to and reacting to your scene partners through a virtual screen to make your choices natural even when you aren't in the room.
